Therapy for Neurodivergent Folks

THERAPY FOR NEURODIVERGENCE IN LOS FELIZ

You’ve always sensed you were different. Turns out, that’s your strength.

THERAPIST FOR NEURODIVERGENCE IN LOS FELIZ

From masking to authenticity: honoring your neurodivergent mind.

Maybe you were the "sensitive one," the quiet observer, or the kid who masked to fit in. Now, as an adult, you might be discovering (or rediscovering) your identity through the lens of ADHD, autism, or other forms of neurodivergence. And it’s bringing both relief and grief.

You’ve spent years working hard to manage the overwhelm, the self-doubt, the burnout, the inner chaos—and now you’re ready to understand yourself with more compassion.

Emma, a neurodivergent-affirming therapist in Los Feliz, offering in-person and online therapy in Oregon and California

Hi, I’m Emma!

Therapy can help you embrace your wiring, not fight it.

For neurodivergent adults, life often feels like a constant push against the current, trying to fit in or force yourself into molds that were never designed for you. Therapy offers a different approach. Instead of trying to change who you are, you learn to understand, honor, and work with your unique wiring.

You will develop strategies to manage overwhelm, navigate relationships, and reduce self-criticism while cultivating a deeper sense of self-compassion and acceptance. The goal is not just coping, it is thriving as your authentic, neurodivergent self.

In therapy for neurodivergence, we can:

Explore your late-diagnosis journey with gentleness and clarity

Unpack internalized ableism, shame, and the pressure to "mask"

Build self-trust, routines, and boundaries that actually work for you

Understand your sensory, emotional, and relational needs

Reclaim your energy for joy, creativity, and connection

How I Work

My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and rooted in curiosity and compassion. I integrate modalities like

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

to help you process stuck trauma and shift long-held beliefs

IFS (Internal Family Systems)

to build a deeper relationship with your inner parts and restore self-trust

Mindfulness and somatic practices

to bring awareness and regulation to your nervous system

Attachment-focused talk therapy

to heal relationship wounds and reconnect with your core self

Together, we’ll move at your pace. Some sessions might focus on skills and tools for the present moment. Others might go deeper—gently exploring your past to understand how it shows up now.

What to Expect

Starting therapy can feel vulnerable—but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s how it works:

  1. Initial Consultation (Free, 20 mins)
We’ll connect briefly by phone to see if we’re a good fit and talk through any questions you may have.

  2. First Session (60 mins)
We’ll explore what’s bringing you in and what you’re hoping for. You don’t need a perfect narrative—just honesty, curiosity, and openness.

  3. Ongoing Sessions
Most clients attend weekly or biweekly sessions, depending on your needs and goals. You’ll set the pace and direction—we’ll work as a team.

You don’t have to keep performing a version of yourself that leaves you exhausted.

Therapy can be a space to finally feel seen, accepted, and empowered.

Common Questions about Therapy for Neurodivergent Adults

FAQs

  • Many neurodivergent adults spend years masking, monitoring themselves, or trying to fit into environments that do not feel supportive to their nervous system. Over time, this can lead to burnout, chronic exhaustion, sensory overwhelm, and feeling disconnected from yourself. Therapy can help you better understand your needs and build a life that works with your brain instead of against it.

  • Therapy for neurodivergent adults is collaborative, affirming, and tailored to your unique way of processing the world. Rather than trying to “fix” who you are, therapy focuses on understanding your nervous system, reducing shame, managing overwhelm, improving self-trust, and helping you feel more connected to yourself.

  • Some people come to therapy with a formal diagnosis, while others are just beginning to explore whether ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivity, or other forms of neurodivergence resonate with their experiences. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Many adults begin recognizing these patterns later in life.

  • Many neurodivergent adults grow up believing they are lazy, too sensitive, dramatic, or “bad at life” when they are actually navigating systems that were not designed for the way their brain works. Therapy can help you untangle shame, self-criticism, and internalized ableism while developing more supportive ways of functioning.

  • Yes. Autistic burnout can look like emotional shutdown, chronic fatigue, sensory overwhelm, executive dysfunction, irritability, or losing the ability to manage everyday tasks the way you once could. Therapy can help you understand the impact of masking and chronic stress while supporting recovery, regulation, boundaries, and self-compassion.

  • Absolutely. Many adults experiencing ADHD struggle with time blindness, procrastination, emotional overwhelm, inconsistent routines, task paralysis, or cycles of shame and burnout. Therapy can help you better understand these patterns while developing tools and systems that actually work for your brain.

  • Masking is when neurodivergent people consciously or unconsciously suppress their natural behaviors, needs, communication style, or reactions in order to fit in socially. While masking can help someone navigate certain environments, it often comes at the cost of exhaustion, anxiety, burnout, and feeling disconnected from your authentic self.

  • Yes. Many adults begin exploring neurodivergence later in life after years of feeling different, overwhelmed, or misunderstood. Therapy can provide a supportive space to process both the relief and grief that can come with understanding yourself through a new lens.

  • Many neurodivergent adults have been told they are too emotional, too sensitive, too intense, or too much for most of their lives. Therapy can help you move away from shame and toward greater self-understanding, nervous system regulation, and self-acceptance.

  • My approach is trauma-informed, relational, and neurodivergent-affirming. I integrate EMDR therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), mindfulness, somatic practices, and attachment-focused therapy to support nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and self-trust.
